Plenty More Awards In The Sea... Stride Treglown Wins Best Commercial Development For Brixham Fish Market For A Second Year!

Stride Treglown Architects has added to its Brixham Fish Market silverware at this year's LABC awards. The £20 million, highly anticipated redevelopment won the Best Large Commercial Development at the LABC South West Business Awards on Friday, 24 June, for Phase 2 of the development. This follows an award in 2010, where Phase 1 achieved the same success.

The project is the result of a partnership between Torbay Council, Torbay Development Agency, community regeneration group Brixham 21 and Torbay Harbour Authority, funded by South West Regional Development Agency; European Regional Development Fund; Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance and Torbay Council.

Started on site in 2007, the development comprises a new fish market, extended quay space, new offices, a fish processing unit, fish retail units and a first floor restaurant facility with unrivalled views of the unique marine vista of Torbay.

The new Brixham Fish Quay forms a key part of the regeneration of the fishing port, encompassing improved fish processing and industry support facilities. The new, world-class fish market is subdivided into three areas – a market for day boats, halls and storage units, and the original cuttlefish market. The development also includes accommodation for the operatives including changing and welfare facilities, a restaurant, catering school and fishmongers.

The original concept scheme was produced by Kensington Taylor Architects, which Stride Treglown redeveloped from design RIBA Stage C. Following a successful design and build bid, Stride Treglown was commissioned for Phase 1 with Dean & Dyball Construction, which included expanding the quay by an additional 3000sqm through a development platform to provide larger service areas. The project team then erected an industrial building divided into units for office suites and retail.

Phase 2 was undertaken by Stride Treglown and Mansell Construction, which saw the demolition of up to 75% of the existing building and the construction of the fish market hall.

The project finished on site in November 2010 and was officially opened by her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal on 29 March of this year.

Alastair Wilson, Regional Director at Stride Treglown, said of the project; "This has been a hugely rewarding development for everyone involved. To be part of the regeneration of such a well-loved port, the comments and praise we have received along the way, a grand royal reception as well as two awards... it has been fantastic."

Torbay Community College

Stride Treglown was also involved in another win at the awards. The £21.7m Torquay Community College - for which the company was appointed as Project Managers - received the award for the Best Education Development.

The new build 1250 pupil BSF Pathfinder secondary school was designed after a number of workshops to evaluate the College’s education delivery. The design of the building together with a number of other wider deliverables has enabled the project to obtain a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Commenting on the awards, Gordon Oliver, Mayor of Torbay said: “I am very proud to live in one the UK’s best coastal locations with a history of rich architectural heritage. I am pleased to see that these award-winning new developments meet the aesthetic aspirations and design quality that Torbay deserves.”

Steve Parrock, Chief Executive of Torbay Development Agency added: “These awards are testament to the success of Torbay’s renaissance and its new buildings reflect the calibre and integrity of Torbay as an excellent destination for business, quality of life and tourism.”
