Work Starts On Site At New Sainsbury’s In Pontypridd

Work has started on a new Sainsbury's store designed by Cardiff-based architects Stride Treglown.

Having received approval from Rhondda Cynon Taff Council last November, the new supermarket in Pontypridd features a store built on stilts, with the ground floor serving as the main customer car park incorporating a glazed entrance atrium containing the lifts, stairs and travelators leading to the main sales area.

The store will replace the former Brown Lenox chain works and will become a prominent landmark viewed from the A470, clad with stone, metal panels and large areas of glazing providing natural daylight to the 43,000sq ft sales floor which also includes a customer restaurant in a key position overlooking the A470.

Outside, the scheme includes a six pump petrol filling station complete with jet and car wash, a 457 space car park as well as a new 12 lane Goods On Line home shopping facility. Cash points and a recycling centre will also be included.

Vehicular access will be provided from the existing roundabout interchange with the A470 and with the majority of car parking spaces located directly beneath the building, the design offers comfortable access for both disabled and parent and child users. Those on foot will also benefit from new pedestrian links.

Gareth Davies, Director at Stride Treglown's Cardiff office said; "We're delighted to be involved in bringing a brand new, state of the art Sainsbury's store to Pontypridd. The town has great regeneration ambitions and we are sure that our sympathetic design supports this."

The building is due for completion in July 2012 by contractors Kier Western.
