Gateway Site gets Go Ahead for Redevelopment

Bristol City Council has unanimously approved Stride Treglown's design for an imaginative scheme involving partial demolition of Redland House, a derelict 1970s office building at the top of Whiteladies Road overlooking the Downs. The development will provide 6,895 sqm of office accommodation and transform a gateway site into the city.

Stride Treglown developed a high quality design to take the existing building back to its structural frame then extend, reclad and refurbish it to create a contemporary building that responds well to its sensitive setting. In keeping with nearby buildings, the restrained palette of materials features Bath stone, red brick and local rubble stone walls.

The building, for developer Redland House BV, will be highly sustainable with a new thermally efficient envelope complete with green roof as well as low energy heating and cooling systems, recycling facilities and solar water heating. The design has also been future-proofed to allow on-site energy generating facilities to be incorporated when this technology becomes readily available.

The design team, including CSJ Planning, worked closely with the Redland & Cotham Amenities Society and the local ward member through several rounds of public consultation to produce a scheme that was supported by local stakeholders and amenity groups.

John Wright of Stride Treglown commented "This is a great opportunity to regenerate the carbuncle currently on the site and will provide excellent office space for any company wanting an impressive presence in the area."
