Our Healthcare Team has submitted a planning application for the proposed new Primary Care Centre in Pencoed, South Wales, which will provide a permanent home for a GP surgery and clinical space for Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University (AMBU) Health Board which is funding the project.
The Centre will provide eight consulting rooms, two treatment rooms, minor surgery, phlebotomy, and a nurse consult room, which will form the practice wing of the building. AMBU Health Board will occupy a separate wing housing two consulting rooms, a treatment room, storage and office space. Private staff space will be located on the first floor, offering elevated views over the countryside.
The design for this facility stems from meeting user's requirements and producing a design that articulates the local aesthetic. It adopts a simple palette of local materials in an innovative and contemporary way allowing the building to both blend in with its surroundings and present a memorable and distinct environment enhancing what is already present. The welcoming entrance is designed to provide a pleasant and calming environment for patients visiting the site.
Sustainable design is a key element of the scheme and the use of solar hot water panels and natural ventilation will contribute towards the scheme achieving a BREEAM "Very Good" rating.
The scheme aims to enhance existing site features, for example it will retain a culvert that runs through the site to provide rainwater attenuation and a wildlife haven. The key to the success of the scheme is its integration into an existing landscape and travel patterns utilising existing rights of way across the site and local public transport interchanges.
Start on site is programmed for March 2010 with completion in January 2011.
