Sainsbury's store in Crindau, Newport

Stride Treglown Designed Sainsbury’s In Newport Complete

Stride Treglown Architects has announced the building completion and opening of a brand new Sainsbury's store in Crindau, Newport.

The store, which replaces the existing Sainsbury's store just a short distance away, occupies a former British Gas works site and is recognised as a key component in the wider regeneration strategy of Crindau.

As part of the regeneration project, it was important that the site was developed to integrate with the future master plan, which aims to turn the predominantly industrial area into a mixed use residential and business district.

Central to the redevelopment of the Crindau area is the construction of the new access road and bridge from the A4042 Heidenheim Drive. The journey of the customer arriving to, entering, and leaving the store was of paramount importance to the layout of the site and the design of the building. The new junction signals the beginning of the Regeneration area and visitors are presented with a view of the store entrance and car park from an elevated position with a welcoming contemporary highly glazed elevation.

As well as the view of the store from the A4042, another key consideration was to maximise the potential sales floor area. The new store is a mix of double height to the main sales area and single storey to back. Along the West elevation to the store is a flat canopy which abuts either side of the entrance lobby. A Grocery On Line Pod has also been incorporated.
