Tamara Jordan, Public Sector & Aviation
I've worked within the Construction Industry for over 12 years and I still have great belief in the fact that Britain leads the world in Science and Technology.
There is no doubt this is set to continue with a need for the construction industry to support this. This has an impact on defence, a sector that I know well.
The Government have recently announced their longer term vision for the make-up of our military – Future Force 2020 – showing a commitment to a rationalised force that still allows for purchase of new significant equipment – Chinook helicopters, Joint Strike Fighter fast jets, Global Combat Ships, Airseeker signals intelligence and surveillance aircraft, upgraded Warrior armoured vehicles. This is a fantastic investment back into the Engineering industry in the UK, which has knock on benefits to the Construction industry through affecting the built make up of military camps, training and equipment development sites. With a long history of designing for the MoD, and being part of a number of current MoD procurement frameworks, we hope that this will perfectly place us for some exciting projects in the next few years.
Commercial air travel is increasing at a rate of around 5% a year and Airports are expanding to accommodate this and new aircraft such as the vast Airbus A380. International surveys have shown a growing desire for superior mixes of the Airport retail offers – a trend named 'retailtainment. As a result regional and international Airports are growing in size and sophistication.
We have developed some great ideas about how we can design sustainably, affordably, efficiently and still aesthetically as we enter a new era of more restricted construction spending. It is a joy to be working in construction even though there may be new challenges to face in the future.
