This project refurbished and revitalised an existing 1970s office building in the centre of Bristol.
The building was outdated and routine maintenance could not address some of the functional problems facing the occupiers/managers. The plant was at the end of its useful life.
A key part of the redevelopment was to re-image the external appearance of the building by providing a new entrance. This has been designed to provide a sense of arrival for visitors and enhance the relationship between the building and the public realm by providing a transition space in the form of a landscaped plaza.
Internally the brief was to provide high quality, flexible, sustainable and modern office accommodation.
Sustainability was addressed sequentially, firstly by reducing energy requirements through upgrade of the thermal performance of the envelope and secondly by improving the efficiency of the plant. This approach resulted in significant improvement in the building’s energy performance which was evidenced by the award of a BREEAM ‘Very good’ rating.
A key part of the refurbishment was to complete the works with minimal disturbance to the sitting tenants; public access was also maintained throughout the construction phase.
