The landscape strategy for Phase 2 of Houndwood Housing looks to the precedents set within Phase One in terms of materials palette, detailing and quality of the public realm, building on the successful character & distinct sense of community at Houndwood.
The Phase 2 proposals, in keeping with Phase 1, place a strong emphasis on the design principles of shared space, as supported by the Manual for Streets, to create a safer pedestrian and cycle-friendly environment that in turn creates a high quality neighbourhood.
A summary of the aims, themes and principal components of the landscape design is summarised below:
To exploit the site’s existing landscape and ecology, its mature trees and tree groups as a framework of an ecologically diverse landscape.
To reflect the character of the Somerset Levels, creating a working landscape that is integrated with a SUDS system.
To create a hierarchy of formal and informal public and private spaces of varying scale and character.
To provide a network of pedestrian and cycle routes through and around the site to suit a wide range of activities.
To enhance the sense of home, offer delight and encourage productive use.
