Stride Treglown is providing architectural services for a new 1800 place One School Pathfinder project under the DfES's Building Schools for the Future initiative for West Sussex County Council. The existing Bognor Regis Community College, a specialist Sports College, dates from the 1930s and covers a split site which has been identified as a major hindrance to improving educational performance.
The existing buildings would have needed substantial updating and extension to allow the school to effectively deliver the curriculum. The new campus development also offered the opportunity to replace existing Infants and Junior schools which allowed a new masterplan to be prepared.
The college's vision also accommodated retention of the modern community Sports Centre and new Vocational Skills Centre, integrating them with a community hub, youth wing and nursery. Our masterplan enables the retention of the existing flood-lit all weather pitch and resolution of vehicle and car-parking issues. The college achieves a 'Very Good' BREEAM rating, particular attention having been paid to sustainability and inclusion. This includes extensive hard and soft landscaping, notably a banked dining and performance area, and sensory planting in the SEN garden.
The four storey building will be a landmark for the community. Stride Treglown leads a team of consultants working with the school and the contractor.
Mark Betts - Business and Community Manager, The Regis School said; "Congratulations on designing such a great building which has seen a transformation in teaching & learning in our school, as well as positive attitude and appreciation from the staff and students of our fantastic building!"
David Jones – Headteacher, The Regis School said; "The advent of a stunning new secondary school has been hugely welcomed by our community. Students, parents, carers and community groups have taken every opportunity to view facilities which have taken The Regis School from a split-site setting reliant on buildings dating back to the 1930’s to a bright, dynamic, state-of-the-art learning environment. As well as enhancing student learning it has created opportunities for adults to utilise the facilities and fantastic new technologies.
The new school is complemented by the Arena Sports Centre, the new Southway Primary School, the Arena Skills Centre, the Stepping Stones Day Nursery and our swimming pool. To this will be added a new Youth Centre in 2011. The campus is very much at the hub of the community with over 400 employees and 6,000 users using its facilities every week.
The Regis School reflects the vision of an inspiring learning environment with a library at its heart and a design shaped by its stakeholders. Spirits are lifted by its imposing structure, vibrant colours, flexible learning facilities, and community friendly facilities such as the lecture theatre, dance studio and reception spaces. It sends out a powerful message about the regeneration of Bognor Regis and its aspirations for the young people."
