Stride Treglown designed a 150 sqm special needs unit, providing accommodation for a couple both suffering from cerebral palsy, and needing 24 hour caring support. The highly insulated timber framed scheme is a departure from standard pattern book design and creates a light, spacious and stimulating environment.

A high degree of home automation and environmental control was incorporated into the design to allow the residents to control doors, windows and light switches from their wheelchairs. By bringing natural light through high level clerestory windows and exposing glulam trusses in the lounge area and kitchen, the design banishes any feeling of institutionalisation.

The unit is one of five in a family of special needs bungalows for Hafod Housing Association throughout South Wales.
