Stride Treglown has designed a 240 sqm special needs unit, providing accommodation for three disabled clients and their carer.
This highly insulated timber framed scheme is a departure from standard pattern book design and creates a light, spacious and stimulating environment.
All bedrooms are equipped with their own fully accessible en-suite bathrooms, hoists and adjustable fixtures and fittings. An accessible, sensory garden incorporating textured hard landscaping and brightly coloured, scented plants was designed to provide a focus from the main living space and encourage residents to use outside spaces as part of their daily routine.
By bringing natural light through high level clerestory windows and exposing glulam trusses in the lounge area and kitchen, the design banishes any feeling of institutionalisation. The unit is one of five in a family of special needs bungalows for Hafod Housing Association throughout South Wales.
