Stride Treglown have provided a scheme which aims to provide a both spatially and ecologically state-of-the-art homeless hostel in place of an existing facility. The north half of the site will accommodate 27 affordable housing units including twelve apartments, set out using a 'Home Zone' concept.
The hostel (located to minimise disturbance to a number of valuable existing trees) is arranged over three levels and consists of twenty six bedrooms, split cluster arrangements (including living/ kitchen areas) with disabled access. The cluster arrangements allow for a smaller, more domestic scale and together with a carefully chosen palette of materials, have reduced any institutional feel.
Small enterprise and training units form a physical divide between the hostel and housing and provide facility opportunities to both hostel and local residents. The hostel aims to achieve a bespoke BREEAM 'excellent' rating, whilst the housing is required to satisfy Eco Homes 'good' rating.
