This second phase of student accommodation at Royal Holloway's Egham campus provides 466 en-suite study bedrooms on the site of student halls that had reached the end of their service life.
The design for the new halls is based on bedroom and kitchen modules built in the initial phase, with overall site layout and choice of external materials developed to reflect the existing buildings immediately surrounding the site. The College and design team took the opportunity to develop and refine aspects of the phase 1 scheme to achieve optimum maintenance and value for money solutions, and to resolve long-standing problems associated with vehicular circulation on the campus.
The tight physical constraints on site layout, close proximity to existing halls of residence (which remained in use throughout the construction period) and sensitive planning context meant that this project had to be carefully planned and organised to minimise disruption. Building work was programmed to minimise disturbance during examination periods, and site logistics deliveries and materials storage and handling - were closely monitored throughout the contract.
