Middlesex University has consolidated its faculties on its Barnet campus with the key move of the relocation of the Art, Design and Media schools.
This £30million complex of buildings, developed in association with Vinci Construction UK, has established a creative hub for all branches of the arts where the buildings themselves support performance, creation and display.
The specialist facilities include two TV studios, video editing suites, recording studios, workshops, photo studios and a multi-use performance space.
At the heart of the main building is an atrium with an inflated ETFE roof; this space is used as a café, for art displays, fashion shows and musical performances. The separate buildings are linked by glazed bridges to facilitate interaction between departments.
The buildings are faced in red brickwork with protruding elements clad in zinc, while the main building is topped by an S-shaped element clad in coloured frameless glass.
The complex has a BREEAM 'Excellent' design score achieved through the extensive use of natural ventilation, green roofs, high levels of insulation and solar water heating.
