Stride Treglown has designed the first public space to be rebuilt after the impact of the IRA bomb on the commercial centre of Manchester.

Vital to the concept was that the square extended to the building edges, borrowing activity from those structures and surrounding streets. Difficult topography meant sculpturing the plaza level was an integral part of the design. Connections across the square are being achieved by a series of curved ramps.

A 100 metre long fountain is designed into the square on the line of a historic ditch. The use of natural materials, lighting and artwork were an integral part of the concept and have been developed to enliven the space.

Stride Treglown has worked closely with Martha Schwartz in the development of the design and its implementation.
