The Block R Extension at UWE will provide additional space for the School of Planning and Architecture as well as new facilities for the School of Product Design, within the Frenchay Campus of the University of the West of England (UWE).  The University asked our Access Consultancy to review the design and assist in consultation by advising on the relationship between design and management of the premises when complete whilst supporting our client's Equalities Officer and Project Manager during consultation and impact assessment and explore ways of delivering inclusive facilities.

Our dedicated Access Consultant put forward recommendations and set up an Inclusion Register, to help our client keep track of the issues that we identified and enable them to arrive at decisions that anticipated implications for management and the impact on disabled people.

Attention was given to the design of the lecture theatre, leading to design changes as a result of consultation. It has was also  recognised that the café environment could be challenging for students on the autistic spectrum and considerations have therefore been given to mitigating these issues whilst identifying alternative environments that autistic students might appreciate.
