Stride Treglown is providing architectural services for a new 1800 place One School Pathfinder project under the DfES's Building Schools for the Future initiative for West Sussex County Council. The existing Bognor Regis Community College, a specialist Sports College, dates from the 1930s and covers a split site which has been identified as a major hindrance to improving educational performance.
The existing buildings need substantial updating and extension to allow the school to effectively deliver the curriculum. The opportunity is also being taken to consolidate existing Infants and Junior schools within the overall site area to allow the new building to be positioned optimally.
The building's predicted emissions are 12.40 kgCO2/m2 per annum. This is a reduction of 31% of the target emissions allowed for under the Building Regulations (18.10 kgCO2/m2 per annum) achieved using a wood pellet biomass boiler for space and water heating. It achieved a BREEAM 'Very Good' rating with a score over 60%.
As assessors we worked alongside our architect colleagues maximising the opportunities for credit gains and minimising the impact of design changes.
