These wooden cooling Towers, which date from the 1950's, are now so rare as to warrant Grade II* listing. These towers are unusual in having been built at so late a date yet using traditional methods dating back to the late C19th.
Stride Treglown were appointed to review the condition of the towers and, in conjunction with a structural engineer, to particularly prepare a methodology for the stabilisation and repair of these wooden structures. We also prepared recommendations for the long term maintenance of both cooling towers.
These cooling towers are constructed entirely of timber, on concrete bases. As such, despite preservative treatment, there have already been replacements. Thus it is only a matter of time before the timber elements of these structures will have been renewed completely.
