Central Market is a fine and complete example of a (Grade II*) listed Victorian market building. Underneath the largely glazed roof, which is supported by decorative metal trusses, is the main two-storey high market hall. The market hall retains some original market stalls and the original central clock tower. There is a gallery floor around the perimeter. Stride Treglown were appointed, initially to review the feasibility of refurbishment, and subsequently to design the refurbishment work, which was carried out in phases.
The works included the conservation and redecoration of original elements e.g. the decorative metalwork, and the provision of 'replica' market stalls to match the originals that remained. This has successfully improved the roofscape of the stalls when viewed from the gallery and, of course, restored the ground floor marketstall area generally.
Particular challenges included preparing a colour scheme for partial redecoration which would make the whole significantly more conservation appropriate. Programming the work so the market could remain open during the refurbishment, so as to minimise any adverse effect on trading, was, of course, the other major challenge, which was successfully met.
