Townsend Farm is a complete example of a Somerset Victorian Farm constructed in the vernacular of local materials including isolated remaining areas of cob walling. Due to the completeness of the farm these buildings are listed grade 2.
Stride Treglown were appointed to prepare an historic building assessment which was to assess the historical and architectural importance and 'specialness' of the farm buildings. The report informed the client's architects, in preparing their proposals for 'restoration' and adaptation for residential use, and the local authority in their decision making.
A desk top assessment and full site inspection were used to compile the Historic Building Assessment.
The importance of these buildings rests in the fact that they are a complete example of a Somerset Victorian Farm and demonstrate the historical development of the farm from its 17th century origins. Fortunately, despite some unfortunate 'refurbishment' in the 1970's – 80's, which can be readily removed, sufficient 'original' structure remains to inform the repair works.
Stride Treglown were subsequently appointed to carry out a full condition survey of the farm buildings.
