Reading University currently accommodates 1670 students distributed across its 130 hectare Whiteknights parkland campus. Mackinder Halls represents phase one of the redevelopment of the student accommodation and was completed in 2010. Stride Treglown Landscape produced a landscape masterplan for new halls scheme. The halls are located to sit sympathetically within the parkland setting renowned for its collection of semi mature trees.
A series of large contemporary courtyards are central to the design. Planting combines ornamental grasses with robust evergreen and native species to provide year round interest. Full consideration has been given to inclusive access and the development benefits from a comprehensive SUDs system.
