The homezone design for Butetown, Cardiff is part of the wider Butetown Regeneration Scheme consisting of 5 projects which have been approved for European and Welsh Assembly grant funding and which will be delivered over the next 3 years.
The Homezone project involves creating a better and safer environment for the Christina Street area of Butetown.
The proposed 'urban stitch' solution ties together physically and socially this disjointed housing estate. This solution creates the right connections across and through the site for pedestrians and traffic alike. A homezone approach has been used to manage traffic and create pedestrian priority streets and spaces.
Anti social behaviour has been managed by creating a well considered series of overlooked spaces aiming to improve social interaction and removing hidden alleyways A robust palette of materials was developed that will create memorable landscape elements and a sense of place for this community.
Consultation is ongoing with residents on this scheme and work is due to start in spring 2012.
